Order of the Shield
The Order of the Holy Shield was founded hundreds of years ago as an elite fighting force of holy warriors. This order consisted mainly of paladins but allowed some combat clerics and a few noble warriors and rangers . The order was inconsequential for its first couple hundred years of existence until the arrival of the nameless one.
During the battle between the nameless one and the creator, the order grew in strength and numbers. By the end of the war, the order was perhaps the most powerful military and richest group in Dhronguur.
After the war, the order was without a mission. What does a force dedicated to ridding the world of evil do when there is no evil? For 5 years the order debated until one day, a paladin named, Yerold wondered into a town that was about to lynch a rapist. Yerold stopped the mob, and asked “Why are you doing this? Don’t you respect the laws of your king? This man needs a trial, not a lynching!” The crowd replied that they were too poor to have a king magistrate and in rural areas of the kingdom, this how justice was done. Yerold was schooled in law and said, I will judge this man. So he set up a court and had a trail. The evidence was overwhelming and by nightfall the rapist was hung. Word of this got out and soon the Order of the Holy Shield was known as “The Judges”. The order refused pay, for this service, and the kings of the three lands, quickly saw the benefits of free judges and declared the order of the shields, the official judges of small towns and gave them legal authority over any town too small to pay for an official magistrate. Later the kings would give them law enforcement capabilities of small towns over to the judges as well.
The Order of the shield presently is a pathetic remnant of its past. The coffers are empty but the orders still refuses to accept payment for the services. The judges that exist today are mostly old men, weak and slow with poor equipment and dull swords. The judges are still respected in the rural areas, but in larger cities, they are laughed at a mocked. Bored Highwaymen after go on judge hunts and kill them for sport, as they are easy prey. Last year 15 judges either retired or were killed in office while 8 new judges were sworn in the replace them. If nothing is done soon many predict the order will disappear.
